Architecture in Valencia – el modernismo

Valencia is a rich city when it comes to architectural highlights. Of course, with Calatrava’s futuristic City of Arts and Sciences on top. However, less known are the many beautiful modernist gems that you can find in the city.

The modernist architecture movement is the Spanish variant of Europe’s Jugendstil, Art Nouveau and Modern Style. Especially in Cataluña and Valencia this style flourished brightly around the end of the 19th century and at the start of the 20th century. At that moment Valencia was expanding rapidly; even causing that the citywalls were being torn down in order to create more space. That is why many of the modernist buildings are to be found in Eixample, the area built in that time period.
